A Story of Hope, Compassion, and Second Chances
Some projects remind us that a single act of kindness can touch many lives in ways we never imagine. The Healing Hearts Bears is one of those extraordinary stories.
Created through the inspiring vision of Ma'am Stella Estremera, this beautiful initiative brings together two communities connected by hope. Children courageously battling cancer at the House of Hope receive handmade teddy bears that offer comfort, encouragement, and a reminder that they are never alone. At the same time, the bears are lovingly handcrafted by women at the Davao City Female Jail, giving them meaningful work, renewed purpose, and an opportunity to rebuild their lives with dignity.
Every Healing Hearts Bear carries a small prayer book inside its satchel, offering words of comfort and hope to the person who receives it. More than a handmade gift, each bear represents compassion, resilience, and the belief that even in life's most difficult moments, kindness has the power to heal.
When The Joyful Giver® learned about this inspiring mission, we knew we wanted to help. We supported the project by donating colorful yarns used to create the bears. While simple in nature, this contribution became part of something much greater. Every strand helped transform into a symbol of hope that would bring comfort to a child while creating opportunities for women working toward a better future.
The impact of this initiative reaches far beyond the bears themselves. Children receive comfort during one of the most challenging seasons of their lives. Women gain valuable skills, meaningful work, and renewed confidence as they prepare for life beyond incarceration. Families, volunteers, and supporters become part of a shared mission rooted in compassion, dignity, and hope.
